Four seasons, 700 metres up the range

Toowoomba has a reputation as one of the cooler places in Queensland, and it earns it.

The city sits on the crest of the Great Dividing Range, around 700 metres above sea level. Summer days average about 28°C and winter days about 17°C. Light frost turns up on several winter nights, and snow has been reported on the higher streets more than once.

Add rich volcanic soil, 159 public parks and jacaranda, camphor laurel and plane trees along the streets, and you get the Garden City, which peaks each September with the Carnival of Flowers and its floral parade. It suits an unhurried first meeting: a coffee, a long walk, no rush to get on to the next thing.

A first meeting in the garden city, in four steps

1. Start with a coffee. The city's cafe and restaurant scene has been compared with Melbourne's, and a daytime coffee is the easiest first meeting there is.
2. Walk the laneways and the old streets. A street art festival each May has left more than 50 large public artworks around the CBD, many in lanes that were once underused. Russell Street is heritage listed, and over fifty places in the city are on the Queensland Heritage Register, so there is always something to talk about.
3. Finish in a garden, or a theatre. The Queensland State Rose Garden is a city landmark, and if the weather turns, the art deco Empire Theatre seats about 1,500.
4. Sort the ride home. Local buses are a TransLink service and coaches link the city with Brisbane, but look up the timetable first, or line up a lift.
