Maryborough, on the Mary River, calls itself the Heritage City of Queensland, and the title is backed by a run of preserved nineteenth and twentieth century buildings, among them the General Post Office, Customs House and City Hall. Heritage markets add to the picture.
The author P. L. Travers was born in a second-storey room of the bank her father managed in the middle of town, in a building that later became a museum about her, The Story Bank. Railways shaped the working side of the city too: the engineering firm Walkers, later Downer Rail, built much of Queensland Rail's rolling stock and many of its locomotives here.
