The Wollongong to Thirroul bike track runs 13 kilometres north from Wollongong Beach as a walking and cycling path beside the coast. East of the centre, Flagstaff Point has two lighthouses: the Breakwater Lighthouse, built of wrought iron plates in 1871, and the Head Lighthouse, built on Flagstaff Hill in 1936. Belmore Basin, dug by convict labour at the foot of the point, shelters the fishing fleet. July and August are the windy months, with westerly gales that can gust past 100 km/h, so save the headland for a calmer day.

Up the coast to Sydney and the west
Sydney is about 85 kilometres to the north, and in a straight line Parramatta is 69 kilometres away and Penrith 77. The Illawarra railway tunnels its way towards the Sydney area, while the Southern Freeway and the Princes Highway come down the escarpment at Mount Ousley and Bulli Pass.
North of the city, Lawrence Hargrave Drive hugs the cliff line and crosses the water on the Sea Cliff Bridge, which replaced part of the road in 2005 and carries walkers as well as vehicles. If you are driving down from the north to meet someone, that is the scenic way in.
