Mandurah takes its name from the Noongar word mandjar, a meeting place or trading place. For this site, that is hard to beat.
The centre sits on the Mandurah Estuary, an outlet for the Peel Inlet and the Harvey Estuary, a system of waterways covering around 134 square kilometres, roughly twice the size of Sydney Harbour. Until the post-war boom of the 1950s and 1960s it was little more than a fishing village. A reputation for boating and fishing then drew retirees, including to the canal estates in the south of the city.
Today it is a coastal city in its own right, joined to Perth along the Indian Ocean by a freeway and a railway line.
Perth is a train ride away, the rest a long road
The railway line that opened in December 2007 links Mandurah with Perth in about 50 minutes, and Transperth buses cover the city itself, so check the last train home before you set out for a night in the city. Fremantle is 53 kilometres away in a straight line and Perth 61, and on the map the two cities now run into each other, with the official edge of Perth's metropolitan area at Singleton, about 9 kilometres north of Mandurah's centre.

A first meeting with something to look at
Pick a public spot you can leave easily, such as the foreshore in the middle of town or the marina at Dolphin Quay. The water gives you plenty to point at.
Dolphins
Mandurah is home to more known bottlenose dolphins than any other place in the state, and dolphin-watching cruises run regularly.
Crab Fest
On the third weekend in March the foreshore fills with food stalls, cooking demonstrations and live music for the blue swimmer crab.
Canal lights
In December the canal areas are known for big Christmas light displays and boat cruises, and New Year's Eve ends in fireworks on the waterfront.
The Giants
Large wooden sculptures by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo form a trail through natural spots around the region, a good excuse for a long walk.
Summers are hot and dry, often with a couple of days above 40°C late in the season, and winters are mild and wet. Mandurah is also one of the windiest cities in the country, with winter rain usually arriving alongside severe winds, so check the forecast first.
