Fremantle Harbour is the port of Perth, and its Inner Harbour handles almost all of Western Australia's container freight. The old town behind the wharves is another matter: limestone buildings in Victorian and Edwardian styles, a good many of them dating from the gold rush years when the harbour was deepened.
Start in the West End, where the Round House went up as a jail in 1830 and 1831 and is still the oldest intact building in the state. A town with this much history gives two adults plenty to talk about before anyone mentions what they are really there for.

- Pick the hour. A sea breeze called the Fremantle Doctor rolls in between noon and 3pm to cool the summer heat, and in summer the town generally runs a few degrees below Perth. Late afternoon suits everyone.
- Pick the spot. The Cappuccino Strip on South Terrace is known for outdoor tables, and the Fishing Boat Harbour has microbreweries, restaurants and a statue of AC/DC frontman Bon Scott. Both are public and easy to leave.

Perth is 16 km from Fremantle in a straight line and Mandurah 53 km, close enough to meet halfway. Beyond them the distances jump: Geraldton is 381 km away in a straight line and Kalgoorlie-Boulder 562 km.
