Kalgoorlie-Boulder dates from 1893, when the Western Australian gold rushes were in full swing, and it soon overtook Coolgardie as the main settlement on the Eastern Goldfields. The money left elaborate heritage buildings behind, in Kalgoorlie and in Boulder, the historic townsite alongside. It is also where the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme ends, with its Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail.
The Super Pit gold mine is nearby, and with so many people working there the city is the social centre of a region where towns are a long way apart. In a place like that a direct message beats a clever one: say what you want, when you can meet and how far you will drive.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder lies 595 km east-northeast of Perth, at the end of the Great Eastern Highway, a touch further than the 546 km a straight line gives. After that come Fremantle at 562 km and Geraldton at 697 km, both in a straight line, so a visitor from outside the Goldfields has some driving or flying ahead. The city has its own airport.
Plan for the weather. January's average high is 33.6°C, and days above 40°C turn up nearly once a week when hot, dry winds arrive from the north or north-east. Winter is the opposite: July days average 16.7°C and nights fall below freezing about four times in a typical winter. Meet early in summer and bring a jacket in July.

Is Kalgoorlie-Boulder one town or two?
It is one city. Kalgoorlie and the historic townsite of Boulder share an urban area and a council, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, which is why the two names are joined. Boulder is the part known as the home of the Super Pit.
