Hookup meaning
What Does Hookup Mean? A Plain Answer
It means casual sex between adults who are not a couple. The longer answer follows, with the dictionaries named.
A hookup is a casual sexual encounter, usually between two people who are not a couple, and hooking up means having one. Dictionaries mark that sense informal or slang. The word is loose, though: depending on who says it, it can mean kissing, sex or simply meeting up, so context decides.
That looseness is why people look it up. A mate who says she hooked up on Saturday might mean a kiss at a party or a night at someone's place. If you are not sure what someone means, ask. Anyone worth meeting will answer plainly.

Cambridge's noun entry is simply "a meeting for sex", and Oxford Learner's describes meeting someone you are not a couple with, for sexual activity.
One word or two
Hook up or hookup?
Two words for the action, one word for the thing.
Two words when it is something people do: "they hooked up after the party". One word when it is a thing: "a hookup", "my last hookup". The noun can mean the encounter or the person you had it with, as American Heritage, Dictionary.com and the online dictionary Wiktionary all record.
Put it before another noun and it works like an adjective, as in "hookup culture" or "hookup site". Some dictionaries print the noun with a hyphen, so hook-up turns up too.
The noun grew out of the verb. Dictionary.com traces "hookup" to the early 1900s, calling it an Americanism formed from "hook up", but that date is for the word in general. None of the entries we read says when the sexual sense arrived, so we will not guess.
Is a hookup a date, a fling or a one-night stand?
Not quite, and the difference is intent. A hookup puts sex first, and on a hookup site it helps to say so before you meet, knowing either of you can still change your mind.
A fling sits close by, but dictionaries word it differently and not all mention sex, so say what you mean if you use it.
A one-night stand is the narrower thing: a hookup that happens once. The entries that define hookup itself set no limit on how often, although Owen and Fincham's definition, from a 2011 study of 500 college students, says one occasion. So a hookup is often a one-off, but need not be.
What a good hookup looks like
Two adults, both keen
Everyone involved is 18 or over and wants to be there. Nobody is being talked round or worn down.
A yes that can change
Consent comes first and can be taken back at any point. The NSW Government says sex has to stop the moment someone changes their mind, and that you check every time, even with someone you have hooked up with before.
Straight talk
Say what you are after and what you are not, including whether you would see each other again. No strings only works when both mean it.
Protection as standard
Use condoms, and know what to do if one splits. Sexual Health Quarters in Perth recommends a yearly test for anyone sexually active, and sooner with a new partner.
The practical side is in our guides to how to hook up, hookup etiquette and what to do after a condom split.
Hookup meaning: your questions
What does hooking up mean on a dating site?
It means two adults who both want sex without commitment arrange to meet. On HookUps365 you say so on your profile and in your first message, and either of you can change your mind at any point.
Can hooking up mean just kissing?
Yes. Garcia and colleagues' 2012 review of the research describes hookups as "uncommitted sexual encounters" that can range from kissing to intercourse. Dictionaries define the noun as a sexual encounter, so if it matters, ask what the person means.
Is a hookup the same as a one-night stand?
Not always. American Heritage limits a one-night stand to a single occasion, and the online dictionary Wiktionary lists it as one kind of hookup. The dictionaries that define hookup itself set no such limit, so a hookup can be a one-off or happen again.
Is hookup a slang word?
Dictionaries label the sexual meaning informal (American Heritage and Dictionary.com) or slang (the online dictionary Wiktionary). It is everyday speech all the same: the NSW Government's consent advice uses the phrase "hooking up" without explaining it.
