Unlike the rest of New South Wales, Broken Hill runs on Central Time, half an hour behind Sydney.

The long road to the next city
Mildura, the closest major city, is about 300 kilometres south. Adelaide, the nearest capital, is more than 500 along the Barrier Highway, and Sydney is over 1,100 kilometres east. Meeting anyone from outside town means a planned trip, so agree the day, the time and whose clock you mean before anybody starts driving.
