Look up in Mount Isa and you will find the lead smelter stack: 270 metres tall, built in 1978, and visible from every part of the city and from up to 40 kilometres out. The city exists because of the minerals found there: Mount Isa Mines, next door, ranks among the most productive mines in history for lead, silver, copper and zinc combined, and the Leichhardt River splits the city into mineside and townside.
Locals call the place the Isa. Lake Moondarra, 19 kilometres north, is the spot for watersports and birdwatching, and the Mount Isa Rodeo, held every year since 1959 on the same weekend as the Mardi Gras, is the city's big social occasion.
Getting in, out and home
Townsville, 783 km away as the crow flies, is the closest place we cover, so anyone coming from outside the north-west is booking a flight, a coach seat or a long drive. These are the ways in:

- By coach. Services run from the city to Townsville, Brisbane and Tennant Creek.
- By train. An overnight service runs to Townsville.
- In town. A local taxi service covers the city, so line up your ride home before you head out.

The dry season, April to November, brings cooler nights and lower humidity, while December to March is a sweltering wet season. Rodeo weekend can fill the city, so choose another weekend if you want things calm.
Is Lake Moondarra a good place for a first meeting?
Go by day. The lake is used for watersports and birdwatching, but it sits 19 km out of town, so sort your transport there and back first. Tell a friend where you are going before you leave.
What else is worth seeing in Mount Isa?
