Three public first meets for Melbourne weather

Melbourne sits where hot air from the inland meets the cold Southern Ocean, so a cold front can arrive with gales, hail and a sudden drop in temperature. The rain mostly comes in short, heavy showers. Choose a spot with a roof or a reason to keep walking, and have a second option ready.

Under cover
The lanes and arcades that cut through the grid, the Block Arcade (1891) and the Royal Arcade among them, keep you dry while you decide whether you are staying for that drink.
In the open
As of October 2026, the Royal Botanic Gardens open at 7.30am every day and close at 7.30pm. A lap of the gardens is a first meet with an easy exit.
Behind glass
As of October 2026, the National Gallery of Victoria opens 10am to 5pm daily at both its St Kilda Road and Fed Square sites, with a later start on ANZAC Day and a closure on Christmas Day. It gives you something to look at besides each other.

On a clear evening the bay is the other option, with beaches from St Kilda and Elwood to Williamstown. Opening hours can change, so check before you go, tell a friend where you are headed, and run your eye over the safety page.

Getting home late, and getting out to Geelong, Ballarat or Bendigo

Nearer the city, the Mornington Peninsula, the Macedon Ranges and the Dandenong Ranges are each about an hour's drive or less, according to their tourism bodies, so a match from out that way is a manageable trip.
